Georgia O'Keeffe - Jimson Weed - painted 1936

GEORGIA O'KEEFFE 1887 - 1986

Georgia O'Keeffe completed at least three other jimson weed paintings in the 1930s, but this canvas is the most ambitious of them and one of the largest floral compositions she created. The artist placed the four flowers in an exuberant design that repeats the tight rhythm of the pinwheel-shaped blossoms. She emphasized the fresh beauty of the flowers with a light, simplified palette of colors. "When I think of the delicate fragrance of the flowers, I almost feel the coolness and sweetness of the evening," she said. Jimson weed grew near her home in New Mexico. This painting was commissioned in 1936 by the cosmetics executive Elizabeth Arden for the exercise room of the new Arden Sport salon in New York.
